Kolossi Castle is a castle near Limassol,
about 9 miles (14 kilometers) to the West of the city.
The first castle on the site was built in or around 1210
by the Frankish military, after King Hugh I of Cyprus gave
the land to the
Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (Knights Hospitaller).
When built, the castle was an important center for the processing of
sugarcane, which was one of the main exports from Cyprus during the Middle Ages.
The original castle was taken by the
Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Knights Templar)
in 1306. but returned to the Knights Hospitaller in 1313.
The present castle on the site was built in 1454 by the Knights Hospitaller
led by the Commander of Kolossi, Louis de Magnac. As a result, Louis de Magnac's
arms can be seen carved in the castle's walls.
Kolossi Castle today consists of a three-story keep, as well as an enclosed rectangular
area (bailey) which is 98 feet (30 meters) by 130 feet (40 meters) in size.
